RefWorks 2.0 training on Wed 24 November at 10.00-12.00 AM

Björn Olofsson from Proquest comes to give a two-piece training on the new RefWorks user interface RefWorks 2.0. The first lesson of the training is intended for new and the later lesson for advanced RefWorks users. You can participate in either or both lessons. Please mention which parts you are going to attend when you register to the training. The training will be held in English.
The training will be held in the lecture room of the Otaniemi Campus Library. The lecture room is in the first floor lobby and the street address of the library is Otaniementie 9.

Minor changes to SFX-linking

A new version of SFX will be taken to use sometime next week. The functionality remains the same, but the SFX window now has more library catalogs and a new look. There should be no break in service and all materials should work as before.

New Resource: Gartner Research Reports

Gartner is a leading international ICT research and consulting company. The Gartner Research Reports focus in the area of information management and leadership. More than 30.000 research reports are available since 1995, the annual growth is around 2500 reports.

All Aalto University staff and students can now access the Gartner Research Reports through Aalto Inside. To use the service, please log-in to Inside using the new Aalto-login (Aalto University Weblogin). On the IT-services page you can find the link to Gartner Research Reports on the bottom on the right.

Please note, that these reports may not be accessed by or given to users outside of the University.

Wiley Online Library Site Maintenance on October 30th

Due to essential site maintenance, access to Wiley Online Library may be interrupted during Saturday, October 30th beginning at noon. The expected duration is up to 2 hours.

Elsevier outages on the 7th and 13th of November

Elsevier products ScienceDirect, Scopus and Hub are expected to be offline and unavailable for approximately 4 hours on November 7th between 10AM. and 2 PM. and for 6 hours on November 13th between 4 PM. and 10 PM. During this time, upgrades will be implemented and maintenance performed.

Statistical information from the World Bank Open Data


The World Bank is providing free and open access to a comprehensive set of data about development in countries around the globe. The databases contain statistical information on most of the nations from the following topics:
agriculture & rural development, aid effectiveness, economic policy and external debt, education, energy and mining, environment, financial sector, health, infrastructure, labor & social protection, poverty, private sector, public sector, science & technology, social development, urban development.

The World Bank Open Data resources include databases (such as World Development Indicators WDI, Global Development Finance GDF, African Development Indicators ADI and Global Economic Monitor GEM), pre-formatted tables and reports. The search results or the entire database can be downloaded and exported e.g. to Excel. 

The individual databases can be found in the Nelli portal and can also be used directly at the World Bank Open Data: http://data.worldbank.org/.

eBook trial: Taylor & Francis and CRC Press

We now have trial access to the Taylor and Francis eBook platform and the CRC Press eBook platform. The trials last until the end of the year 2010. Authentication is by IP and the material is available from the Aalto University network.


The Taylor and Francis eBook collection includes titles in humanities and social sciences, behavioural sciences,  natural sciences, technology, medicine and law.

The CRC Press collection includes tiles in technical, scientific and engineering fields.

Trial Use: Bentham Direct

The Bentham Direct journals are in trial use in the Aalto network until 5.11.2010. The package mostly includes titles in medicine, but also includes some journals on analytical, combinatorial and organic chemistry, bioinformatics, biotechnology, drug delivery, engineering, nanoscience and neuroscience, as well as patents in these fields.

Nelli back in use

The problems with the Nelli portal have been fixed and it works properly again.

Problems with Nelli search results

For an unknown reason search results are currently not shown in the Nelli-portal. The search seems to be performed normally, but when accessing the result list the error message: "Error 501 Timeout reached" is shown.

The problem has been reported and will hopefully be fixed soon. Please use the publisher platforms in the meanwhile.

Myilibrary improvements

Myilibrary has updated their platform and e-book viewer to offer smoother navigation and easier use. You can now scroll down to the next page (unfortunately not in quite all the books, as one format does not allow this). The new viewer seems to work smoothly with Vista, unlike its predecessor.

Service break and new website: Annual Reviews

New Platform for Wiley-Blackwell Products

Wiley has launched their new platform Wiley Online Library , which replaces Wiley InterScience.  This includes all materials previously used on the Wiley InterScience and Blackwell Synergy platforms.

Service break: Elsevier

ScienceDirect and Scopus will be unavailable due to scheduled maintenance for approximately 9 hours on Saturday, 28 August. Down time is expected to be from 15:30PM August 28th to 00:30AM, August 29th.

Reply to the comment on the previous post

As the blog has already thrice eaten my comment response to the comment on the previous post, I'll now see if i can post it here so it does not disappear on refresh:

When using remotely you first need to log-in to the Nelli-portal and then select HS (Helsingin Sanomat or Hesari) from the databases and follow the link. I now also added it to the journals, so it can be found in the journal list tomorrow.

You will always be asked to log-in when accessing restricted materials in this service. But in the log-in screen select 'Yrityskäyttäjä, kirjaudu sisään tästä ›' which takes you to another log-in page. Next to the log-in boxes should be the text 'Kirjaudu Yritystunnuksella. Yhteisö: Aalto-yliopisto...' beneath which is a button 'Kirjaudu' which will log you on without entering any log-in details.

Complicated, I admit, but unfortunately the only way to do it with this resource.

Let me know if there are any further problems.

Access to HS.fi (Helsingin Sanomat)

We now have access to Helsingin Sanomat, Finland's biggest daily newspaper. We have access to the digital paper as well as the HS archive. The pages also include the international edition of the paper, with abstracts in English of a number of daily stories and a weekly digest of edited articles from the newspaper.

In the log-in screen select 'Yrityskäyttäjä, kirjaudu sisään tästä ›'. Then click 'Kirjaudu' after the text 'Kirjaudu Yritystunnuksella. Yhteisö: Aalto-yliopisto'.

New Group Code for Refworks

The TKK Refworks account has been renamed the Aalto University account and the Group Code used in remote access has been changed. All registered users have been informed of the new Group Code at their registered email address. If you have not updated your email or have not received the code for some other reason, you can inquire for it from the library information service.

The user accounts remain otherwise unaffected.

Orbis, Zephyr and Bankscope in use

Three new databases: Orbis, Zephyr and Bankscope are now in use on all of the Aalto University campuses. They can be found in the Nelli-portal.

ORBIS is a comprehensive database of companies around the world, containing information on 70 million companies. Information is gathered from nearly 100 sources and is filtered into various standard report formats. Coverage is constantly increasing: both depth of data and number of countries. ORBIS has sections of superlative coverage including listed companies worldwide, public and private banks and insurance companies plus private European companies, as well as a unique ownership database.

ZEPHYR is a comprehensive database of deal information worldwide, containing approximately 800 000 transactions. It contains information on M&A, IPO, private equity and venture capital deals. It also contains links to the detailed financial information on the companies involved in the deals.

BANKSCOPE is a database of banks' financial statements, ratings and intelligence, with up to 16 years of detailed accounts for each bank. It contains comprehensive information on banks across the globe. It can be used to research individual banks and to find banks with specific profiles for further analysis.

New interface for Beilstein&Gmelin in trial use

The CrossFire Commander interface for the Beilstein and Gmelin databases will be replaced by the new Reaxys interface in 2011. Reaxys is now in trial use here and a brochure can be found here. More information on Reaxys can be found at http://www.info.reaxys.com/.

No access to the ACS Legacy Archives

Access to the earlier volumes of journals published by the American Chemical Society has been cut for reasons unknown. For now, only volumes 1996 onwards can be used. The older volumes are a part of our subscription and the publisher has been asked to renew access as soon as possible.

New resources

Becoming a part of the new Aalto University has given us access to many new resources, mainly from the fields of economics, management, art and design. Ten new databases and more than 1500 new journals are now available, as well as three new reference works and some new tools. Scopus finally back in use, except for a service break on Sunday

The Scopus database is finally back in use. Elsevier apologise for the long break in service and reassure us that the database will be in use from now on. Except, of course, for the scheduled maintenance break on Sunday, 14 March, when the system is down for approximately 8.5 hours from 5:30am GMT to 2:00pm GMT. Hopefully no further problems will occure.

The Scopus database and the IEEE library are now back in use.

SFX linking not available for many resources

We now have regained access to most of our resources. Unfortunately, the SFX-linking is no-longer working in some of the databases that support it. The linking will be set up as soon as we receive the required information from the publishers.

Currently, we have no access to the Scopus and IEEE databases. This is due to the publisher changing accounts from the Helsinki University of Technology to the Aalto University. The publisher has been notified and the immediate restoration of access requested.

New address for Ebrary books

As a part of the Aalto University, we will use the Ebary platform from a different address. The address has been updated to the Nelli portal and the SFX-linking system, but the direct links in the TEEMU collection database have not yet been updated. You can access individual books from TEEMU  by using the red SFX-linking button or by changing the 'otaniemi' in the direct link address to 'aalto'.

Access to Springer journals returned

Access to Springer journals has been returned and the material can be used again at http://www.springerlink.com/.

Log-in for ISI Web of Science

Users need to log in to use the ISI WoS databases until IP authentification can be set up. The log-in information is confidential and will only be valid until Thomson can set up the IP authentification. The information may not be publicly distributed for example on web pages. Researchers who need to use the databases before IP access works can request the information from infolib@tkk.fi.
